In forests and mountains, the dry leaves, the dead remains of animals, the trees that would have fallen due to strong storm, slowly start to decay.

After the process of decaying , they get mixed with the top soil, and form the most richly fertile and nutritious soil, which is perfect for growth of plants, trees, etc.

The formation of top soil takes many many years, like it might take a century or millions of years also. So in mountains and forests, since the trees and plants have wide spread strong roots, they hold the soil very strongly and don't allow. the souls to get eroded.
