There were Tamil speakers and Sinhalese people in Sri Lanka. There was a majoritarian policy which favoured the Sinhalese inconsiderate of Tamil speakers. This made the Tamils feel alienated from Sri Lanka and they demanded a separate Tamil state which was denied by the Sri Lankan government. This increased tensions among the two groups which finally led to a civil war.
