The trading company's rivalry outsed the Dutch and the Portuguese from the Indian scene. Now only the English and French were left to complete with each other for the Indian Markets. Between 1740 - 1760 European wars in which France and England were opponent brought them into conflict in India as well.

In order to protect her colonies in Africa and a few islands in the Pacific, Germany began to build a powerful navy with a view to achieving parity with Britain. One of its ships the Imperator, built in 1912 was the largest in the world. The Germans dug the Kiel Canal deeper so that battleships could enter its waters. Due to increase of colonization, naval development of Kaiser William II increased conflict between England and Germany.
