The causes of Russia's Civil War were the failure of provisional government of Kerensky, the growing power of the soviets, the treaty of Brest-Litovsk angered Russians, and the Bolsheviks wanted to wipe out all their enemies. The outcome was the Bolshevik victory over the Whites and 14,000,000 dead.

Rampant inflation, food shortages, dismal conditions for the industrial workers, abuses by an overbearing nobility to include the tsar were all factors that contributed to the discontent in Russia leading up to the revolutions. In addition the population had become thoroughly disenchanted with participating in WWI owing to the ghastly performance by the Russian military.

There were actually several revolutions. the final two occurred in 1917. The February revolution led to the abdication of the tsar and assumption of power by the parliament (the Duma). The October Revolution ultimately resulted in the Bolshevik take over of the country.

Civil war continued for several years following 1917 involving the Bolsheviks (Reds), loyalists (Whites), an independence faction, and non-Bolshevik socialists. The Bolsheviks prevailed over the other groups and eventually became the Communist Party.
