The fall of the Indian cotton industry is one of the important factors behind the decline of Indian GDP under the British Rule.

The primary motive behind the de-industrialization by the British government was two- fold

(I) to get raw materials from India at cheap rate and thus to reduce India to a mere exporter of raw materials to the British industries

(ii) to sell British manufactured goods in Indian market at higher prices.
