Jatis were formed in later vedic period as in vedic period caste system was not so rigid as people workship natural source like sun and hevenly bodies but in later vedic period brahmines came into the power and in order to mantain there status insociey they led division of indian society in 4 class. 1) brahmines 2) kshatriyas 3 vashyas 4) sudras

The reasons may be as people use to workship many god so in order to evoke ones presence or existance there may be division of class in jatis and there are3000 jatis in india.
