Bombay became the capital city of Bombay presidency in 1819 after the defeat of Marathas by British.
As the trade in opium and other trade grew,large communities of traders of bankers as well as artisians and shopkeepers came to settle in Bombay.Other important reason of expansion of bombay was the eshtablishment of textile mills which also led to fresh surge in migration.
