The legal measures taken by the government to empower the consumers in India were :

1) The MRTP Act was enacted in the year 1984 to check unfair trade practices by manufacturers and service providers.

2) The consumer Protection Act was enacted in the year 1986 to protect consumers from exploitation in the Marketplace.

3) Subsequently consumer courts have been set up to provide justice to consumers who have been treated unfairly in the market places.
