The poet brings about a negative theme in the beginning by mentioning the hemlock tree, which is poisonous, and the crow, which is said to be a harbinger of death. When the crow shook the tree causing the dust of snow to fall on the poet, literally shaking the poet from his negative thoughts. Hence making the poet want to end the day on a joyful note instead of a regretful one.
