Richard Bach uses Jonathan Seagull as a metaphor for all human beings who want to break free from the drudgery of mundane life and strive to achieve something that is thought to be beyond our capabilities by choosing a path that is least trodden.

Initially we may feel a little unusual as to why Jonathan abhors to be like other gulls because we also have been conditioned by our surroundings to only aspire for things that are "normal."

But as we go along with Jonathan we start to understand that it is important for all of us to do the things that we love the most. Jonathan is ostracised by the flock, but he sticks to his love of flying and at the end he succeeds in turning almost everybody around to his way of thinking that seagulls can be "creatures of excellence and intelligence and skill".

The metaphysical context of Jonathan's story may seem intellectual. Things like transcending limitations of time and space, and being in the "here and now" to achieve perfection may go beyond our heads on first reading. But I am sure you can return to this story again and again as you gain in experience and find newer obstacles to overcome, which I have been doing all these years.

The lesson that we can learn from life of young seagull:

  • The main values that we can decipher from the seagull are that falling and hurting ourselves is a part of every organism be it human or animal. We should learn to accept these challenges in life and learn to move forward with it.
  • Challenges in life are important as they teach us what it is like to fall and rise after we are presented with failures and complications.
  • The real strength doesn’t lie in getting up after failing but to really face the failure and rise and shine like no one ever has before. Therefore we should learn to pick ourselves up for a fresh start and move forward with our lives.
