Having lost her sense of sight and sound, Helen had a unique relationship with Nature.Nature had a calming effect on her, and she loved to be outdoors.Since it was necessary for her, to rely on her other senses to be able to differentiate and recognise things, her sense of touch and smell told her a lot of things about nature. For example when she was introduced to mollusks and taught about the 'Children of the Sea', she learned that the Nautilus, absorbs minerals and materials from the sea and makes it a part of itself. The same process, she thinks, is what the human mind undergoes, where it assimilates all the knowledge, and turns it into pearls of wisdom.Hence for Helen, everything in nature had something to teach her, and she was a happy student finding her way around, through gardens and meadows, with Miss Sullivan by her side, learning lessons from Nature.
