Direct action day (16th August 1946) is also known as Calcutta killings. It was day when communal riots engulfed Calcutta in the Bengal province of the British India.It was announced by the Muslim league leader Muhammad Ali Jinnah to shows its strength for the demand of Pakistan, It is considered to be the start of the week of the long knifes. It led to the death of 5000 to 10000 people and lasted for four days in Calcutta and soon spread to several districts of Bihar and Garmukteshvar in United provinces. Hussain Suharwardy was the chief minister of Bengal during  the killings.
