He didn't become that in a day. In fact, he was initially dismissed as a light-weight.
It was his hard work, his tireless efforts at being one with people at the lowest level of the pyramid, his including all Indians in his movement, his living among the poor & outcaste, that made him a hugely popular leader.
He listened to them, understood their problems, and worked to address these.
