What made Gulliver think that the Lilliputians were excellent mathematicians?

The emperor orders that a bed be made for Gulliver. Their mathematical calculations point to 600 beds to be used, in addition to the sheets and pillows of similar calculations. Guilliver is also told he would get a suit calculated and put together by 300 tailors.

 

These people are most excellent mathematicians, and arrived to a great perfection in mechanics, by the countenance and encouragement of the emperor, who is a renowned patron of learning.
