Helen was deaf and blind after a mysterious illness occurred to her. She realized that she was different from other people before her teacher came to her. She had noticed that her mother and friends did not use signs as she did when they wanted anything done, but talked with their mouths. Sometimes she stood between two persons who were conversing and touched their lips. She could not understand. She moved her lips and gesticulated frantically without result. This made her so angry at times that she kicked and screamed until was exhausted.
