The Royal Enfield rifle were suspected of being coated with the fat of cow and pigs. Both Hindu and Muslim sepoys were offended by the introduction of these cartridges , their religious sentiments were affected and this was the reason that they were refused to use the cartridges.

Because the cartridges are greased with cow and pork fat. Cows are sacred to Hindus and pork is forbidden by muslims.So thier religious sentiments not let them to use those cartridges.
