Since hydrogen and helium where created , “clouds” were becoming bigger and bigger , until eventually gravity did it’s things and create a star , then that star exploded and released heavier materials and other gases for the formations of more stars , some bigger ,some smaller .

But not all gas and heavier materials were close to form new stars , some began to orbit the star .

Gravity once again did it’s most important role :”To create order out of chaos”

These materials then began to get closer and closer together to form the Gas Giants and The Rocky planets .

As this questions doesn’t require this I won’t go down to everything that happened , but a simplified version:

-Bam bam , jupiter comes from god knows where , makes the rocky planets to inside sun , bam bam , new rocky planets but a lot closer , phew cachunks Jupiter and Saturn go farther into solar system , making the shy neptune to go through a belt of comets , BAM PHEW Late Heavy Bombardment , phew phew some rocks makes dinosaurs extinct , and nothing interesting after that .

Short answer : The planets in our solar system aren’t the biggest , but they quite decently sized , that happened because the sun had a lot of materials near it in it’s new born star age .
