Given Owens' speed and jumping ability, giving up a foot still allowed him to easily post one of the best qualifying marks and advance without risking that fatal foul. He did so, jumping 7.64 meters to qualify, then jumped 8.06 meters twice in the final competition to win the gold medal and set an Olympic record.
Carl Ludwig "Luz" Long (27 April 1913 – 14 July 1943) was a German Olympic long-jumper, notable for winning the silver medal in the event at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin and for giving technical advice to his competitor, Jesse Owens, who went on to win the gold medal for the long jump.
