  • According to mythology, Rameshwaram is considered to be a place where Lord Ram -the seventh incarnation of Vishnu built a bridge from Rameshwaram to Sri Lanka to rescue his wife Sita from the demon king Ravana. Another belief says that Rameshwaram is the place where Lord Rama worshipped Lord Shiva to get relief from the sin of killing the Brahmin king, Ravana. Rama decided to build the Shivalingam for worshiping and asked Hanuman to bring linga from the Himalayas. Fetching took time and meanwhile Sita built a Shivalingam there. This lingam is still present at the Ramanathaswamy Temple shrine.
