Olga's continuous scolding and her desire to help the beggar made him realize his mistakes. Olga was so worried about Lushkoff that she even chopped the wood for him. Seeing so much love and care for himself by the cook, he stopped drinking.

Olga's continuous reprimands
While Lushkoff lives his life drinking and swindling away, Olga tried reforming him. While she made continuous efforts to stop him from drinking, he did try to correct his behaviour. When he witnessed the continuous remarks of scoldings by her, he tried to change himself for the better. Even though Olga was an ill-tempered person, she was the one who showered Lushkoff with pity and concern.
