Hey,

Despite the absence of reference text, the Korean War which was fought by the communist-backed North Korea and the US-backed South Korea was tragic due to the fact that many of the families affected by the war were forced to part ways.

Moreover, famine and a series of dictatorial regimes plagued the two countries even after the signing of the Korean truce.

North Koreans, strongly influenced by Soviet and North Korean propaganda, sought to reunite the Korean peninsula. The peninsula, united as Korea, had fought hard for freedom from Japanese occupation, and there was widespread discontent among all Koreans when immediate independence was not given at the end of Japanese occupation, but rather a joint trusteeship of the Soviet Union and the United States. Both sides sought to unite the peninsula. I would add that the South Koreans were strongly influenced by the USA. Indeed their first premier was US educated. The USSR and China had the geographic advantage of land borders and also the self interest of keeping at least the North communist.
