Undoubtedly, the lady in the red was cleverer than Horace. He had made an elaborate plan to rob the house; he had done reconnaissance and gathered information about the house.
The lady in the red outsmarted Horace, she knew all his moves. As he was about to open the safe, she appeared pretending to be the mistress of the house and coaxed him to open the safe assuring him she would let him go. She had even befriended Sherry, the dog.
Horace easily fell in her trap; he became complacent, and he opened the safe without his gloves on. Later on when the police caught him, he realized the truth.
