Answer:The possible answer lies in the fact that huge amount of animal sacrifices including cows were practiced during he yajnas. Their used to be an absolute blood bath during these festivities. Buddhism and Jainism gained popularity during this period of time because of their non violent teachings. The Vedic religion (Bramhinical) was entwined in rigorous and stringent rituals to establish the absolute control of Bramhins in religious matters. The Neo religions like Buddhism were much simpler to practice and appealed to the average population. People started feeling that any religion which teaches generally peacefull coexistence cannot be practiced with too many dead animals on the eating plate. The general population realized that a religion should tech kindness, fellow feeling, peace and keeping away from cruelty towards animals.
