What made the poet stand at the divergsion for long time

The poet was totally confused as to which road he should choose. The first road was worn out by many people using it which tells us that it is an easy road and has no surprises/ excitement. But the second road is new and has been seldom used, which means that it has a lot of surprises and exciting adventures.

He was also not sure to choose which one as it was a life-altering decison which may change his life for the good/bad and may mar/make his future.
