HG Wells’ In The Door in the Wall theme is of escape, appearance, happiness, uncertainty, conflict, doubt, regret, and fear. Narrated by a man named Redmond, the story is the conflict between imagination and science, that is, the contrast between science and aesthetics and the difficulty of selecting one of them.
EXPLANATION:
- Wallace is in conflict between staying or succumbing to his imaginations in this setting. With all its countless challenges and disappointments, the fantasy world into which the wall leads is much more thrilling, more interesting than the daily life of the wall. This view of the door helps to remember lost innocence of a time when everything seemed so fresh, beautiful and promise-filled in his long childhood. Wallace's got to make a great decision. Wherever he is, he can either remain stuck in a miserable and unfulfilling life, or he can take a leap of faith, open the wall gate and wait against hope that he will once again be taken into his youth's blissful Edenic Gardens.
- Redmond's responsibility to Wallace as a mentor and his devotion to reason has turned him backwards. While he thinks the door in the wall is possibly only a product of his friend's vibrant theory, his hope of a genuinely secret garden behind it cannot be absolutely reduced. If anybody else had asked him that, Redmond would have certainly rejected the idea itself. But since he claims to have seen this secret garden, he feels he needs to keep his justification for some moment because it's his good friend Wallace, someone with which he knows well, and someone he grew up. The biggest dispute Wallace had to determine in his life between the intellectual world and the imaginary one.
- A good politician, he is fascinated by an enticing door in a wall's recurring view. He realizes that he is entering a world of wonder and mystery when he opens the door but he is never fortunate because of the demands of life and his job. Once he finally decides to let himself open the door, he makes a fatal mistake at the end of the story. His long rejection of his nature's creative side made him unable to distinguish between fantasy and reality. Redmond, who signifies the voice of reason, faces the biggest dilemma as to whether or not he should believe Wallace's wonderful story. Appreciation of the story will suggest that it is important to cultivate the logical and creative on both sides of a human personality.
