What makes Elections in India Democratic?

In India, elections are held by an independent and powerful Election Commission abbreviated as EC. The EC enjoys the same kind of independence the Judiciary enjoys.

The Cheif Election Commissioner, CEC, is appointed by the President of India. But once appointed, the CEC is not answerable to the President, or the government. If the government or the ruling party doesn't like what the Commission does, they cannot remove the CEC.

Rarely few EC's in the world have such wide-ranging powers as the Election Commission of India.

Common people in India attach a lot of importance to elections. They feel that through elections they can bring pressure on political parties to adopt certain policies and programs favorable to them.

The Electoral outcomes are usually accepted as the 'People's Verdict' by the defeated party. There are barely any disputed elections.
