the duplication of DNA material itself inside the organelle when there is a defficiency of energy in animals or green pigment in plants makes them semi autonomous
autonomous means independent but semi means half independence so they have independence to duplicate their DNA material any time makes them semi autonomous organelle

mitochondria and plastid have their own ribosome and DNA hense they can synthesise some of their own proteins and can replicate independently from cell .. Hence,mitochondria and plastids are called semi-autonomous.
