The concepts of hero change over time, places, and cultures. I'd say they are cultural and social constructs. The word originally denotes a person with physical valor and courage as of in ancient Greek mythology, yet gradually more meanings were attached to it. There are probably some universal traits attached to 'hero' shared by different cultures today, such as courage, altruism... perhaps everyone would agree Nelson Mandela or Martin Luther King was a hero in contemporary western societies.
