Blood plasma is yellow in colour because of the presence of a yellow pigment called bilubrin.

This is usually not visible to us unless the blood cells are all removed from blood. The blood cells RBC give a red colour to normal blood. When blood cells are removed what remains is plasma.

Plasma is made of water and proteins. Bilubrin is formed by breakdown of haemoglobin. This is insoluble in water hence remains in plasma as it moves to the liver for removal, in bile. If bilubrin is not removed regularly we end up with excess bilubrin poisoning… or jaundice.
