The haemoglobin protein that is in the blood makes the blood look red. The various subunits of the haemoglobin protein are called hemes and they impart red colour to the blood.

The hemes can bind molecules of iron and the molecules of iron can bind oxygen molecules. The blood cells appear red as they interact with oxygen and iron.
