When a light wave passes through a slit, it changes its path. This is due to the difference in refractive index of the medium through which the light wave travels.

This phenomenon is called as Diffraction, where a wave bends or changes its path upon encountering an obstacle or an aperture into the geometrical shadow region of the slit.

It can occur in all kinds of waves like sound waves, light waves, water waves, and electromagnetic waves.

Diffraction occurs only when the obstacle or slit has a comparable size to the wavelength of the wave.
