It takes in a gas called carbon dioxide from the air and gives off oxygen. When you breathe, you take in the oxygen given off by trees and other plants, and breathe out carbon dioxide. When fall comes and daytimes get shorter, a little corky layer grows where each leaf stem joins a tree branch.
