Answer:

Simple .

The revolt of 1857 was fought on huge scale and it was the first try by anyone who is Indian to free India. Till 1856 the British conquered large areas of India by wars, subsidiary alliance, pretext of alleged misrule. The Marathas fought the British but because of their owb territorial concerns. The Mysore king Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan fought the British but for their own reasons. In fact the Revolt was the first instance by the soldiers or sepoys to fight and remove the British Army. Entire India fought unitedly . So the Revolt is rightly called the First war of Independence.
