Honey bees are called social insects as they exercise division of labour and live in colonies. A typical colony has one queen, who is the only one capable of laying fertilised eggs. There are 20,000 to 80,000 female worker bees, who, as the term 'worker' suggests, undertake and perform all the task relating to the colony, the primary among them being foraging food, constructing hive, storing honey for colder seasons and so on. There are hundreds of male drones, but most are ejected during lean seasons. Drones fertilise the queens outside the hive in mid-air, during nuptial flights. Soon after the fertilisation, the drone dies. A new queen mates with a new drone. The female workers lay unfertilised eggs.

The division of labour and survival of the fittest, as exhibited by honey bees, is indeed amazing as well as interesting.
