what mass of ice at 0C needs to be added to 100g of water at 22C to lower the temperature to 5C?(specific latent heat of fusion=336J/g)​

Heat extracted by ice at 0

C to melt = Heat given by water to reach 0

o

C from 40

o

C.

ML=mcθ

Where, θ = change in temperature of water

L = Specific Latent heat of ice

c = Specific heat capacity of water

M = Mass of ice required

m = mass of water

M×336=300×4.2×(40−0)

M=

336

300×4.2×40

=150g

∴ Ice required to lower the temperature of water =150g
