The leaves contain a pigment called chlorophyll, which colors the leaves green. Chlorophyll can make food the plant can use from carbon dioxide, water, nutrients, and energy from sunlight. This process is called photosynthesis.

Certain materials are required by leaves to produce food. They are :-

✧ Chlorophyll - the green substance that gives the plant their green colour.

✧ Water and minerals - absorbed by roots , transported to leaves by the xylem vessels.

✧ Carbon Dioxide - taken in from air by small pores called stomata.

✧ Sunlight (solar energy) - obtained by the green pigment present in leaves called chlorophyll.

These materials are respectively known as "raw materials".
