During the struggle to gain independence, the main aim of Mahatma Gandhi was to join together Hindus and Muslims. During the Civil disobedience movement , hindu peasants were not allowed to join the movement because the Conservative high caste hindus ( sanatanis ) may oppress this.
Gandhiji also hated this and called the untouchables "harijan".
As per This wish of Gandhi and also for equality , the indian constitution banned untouchability

Well first of all the main reason is that the father of our constitution Mr. Ambedkar was an untouchable. Secondly our constitution wanted India to be an all inclusive country. Everyone here is considered equal there is no hierarchy. Also the system of “caste” was to be eliminated as everyone even “lower class” people can achieve the same things people of a higher caste could. People used to be discriminated based on their caste and didn’t get any help, support in fact they didn’t even get opportunities. That’s why the constitution banned untouchability.
