It is hard to know where to start, because the question doesn’t state whether a particular country’s rivers are the subject of the enquiry, or rivers in general. It is also incumbent on the Water Companies to impose controls on the industrial effluents discharged to sewerage systems so that the biological processes of the sewage treatment works are not harmed by toxic constituents of the industrial effluents
