Several evil practices like Sati, Purdah system, Child Marriage, Female infanticide were prevalent those days. The East India Company enacted many laws such as abolition of sati, widow remarriage, increasing the minimum age to marry, to reform the Indian society.

Answer:

The British introduced several reforms:

-> They passed laws to stop the practice of sati and to encourage the remarriage of widows.

-> They promoted English language education.

-> In 1850, the Company passed a new law that made the conversion to Christianity easier.

Britishers were instrumental in introducing Western culture, education and scientific techniques. Through those means, they gave traditional Indian life a jolt and galvanized the life and culture of its people. Undoubtedly, the Seventeenth Century marked the zenith of Indian medieval glory.

These reforms received mixed response from Indians. While progressive and educated Indians welcomed these reforms, conservative Indians considered these reforms as interferences made by the British in Indian. They criticised the British for passing these reforms.
