The condition of the women was not encouraging at the time of British Rule in India.

Several evil practices like Sati, Purdah system, Child Marriage, Female infanticide were prevalent those days.

The East India Company enacted many laws such as abolition of sati, widow remarriage, increasing the minimum age to marry, to reform the Indian society.
