what measures should the League of nations have taken to avoid the Second World War .
Answers
Answer:
The League should have persuaded USA to join it. It should have also invited USSR to become its members. The League followed a policy of appeasement. It did not take adequate measures when Hitler breached the terms of the treaty of Versailles and in the case of conquest of Ethiopia by Italy.

Explanation:
Not much measures could be done since the league of nation was flawed since day 1 and the second world war was unfortunately an inevitable war due to the treaty of versailles and various reasons.
The major flaw of the league of nations was that it only had two great powers in britain and france, both broke and weak after WWI. Two strong powers, USA and USSR were not in the league due to isolationism and communism not being invited respectively. USA had strong economic influence and trade embargo placed by her would be enough to bring down most countries. USSR had an army strong enough to coerce most countries either. However neither one was in the league and Britain and France together lacked enough influence. Britain was a major trading country, thus was reluctant in placing any trade embargo, a powerful weapon of the league. France on the other hand was weak thus did not want to support any military operation against aggressor. The selfishness of the two countries doomed the league ever since its birth.
Also the fact that the league had no army was a disaster, as this meant that all military action suggested by the league had to be carried out by its members, which as mentioned both France and Britain were reluctant in doing so. The need for unanimous decision meant no decision could be made, and hindered the speed of reaction from the league against acts of aggression, for example Italy invading Ethiopia and Japan invading China.
WWII was arguably a war that could not be avoided, even by a capable league. Germans were furious at the treaty of versailles, and the treaty was neither harsh enough to destroy Germany nor was it lenient enough to calm the Germans. The weakness of the later Weimar republic and the difficult of the great depression paved the road for Hitler and supporters of militarism, imperialism, expansionism and nationalism. Japan in the meantime faced economic recession and thus the government became militaristic and turned to invasion in an attempt to divert domestic attention. Italian was not happy with the treaty either.
The great depression was another contributing factor to WWII. The great depression further weakened Britain and France, making them vulnerable and reluctant to act accordingly to any aggressors, for example placing trade embargo or even send troops. This turned them towards appeasement, which not only accelerated the rise of Germany and Japan, this also made USSR angry and later led to Stalin’s refusal to cooperate with the west and instead cooperated with Hitler during invasion of Poland. Germany and Japan were hit badly by the great depression, and people in these two countries thus embraced militarism and imperialism as a desperate solution to the recession.
Thus there was very little the league of nations could do to stop WWII. WWII was destined to happen and the league was destined to fail in the first day, let alone stopping the greatest tragedy of mankind. Unless at the first place both USSR and USA had joined the league with the league having a substantial army, or else unfortunately no measure from the league could really stop the inevitable from happening.
