Nizam-ul-mulk, Asaf Jah-I posted a French regent in Hyderabad as an adviser. Meanwhile, the Napoleonic Wars broke out in Europe and the French decide to carry out an expedition to destroy the English factories in India. Hyderabad is in on the plan. A force of 14,000 men fought under the revolutionary tricolour flag. Their commander, Michel Joachim Marie Raymond wanted to unite the French in India against the British, establishing France as the dominant power. But Raymond died under mysterious circumstances in 1798, and his deputy, Jean-Pierre Piron picked up his unfinished work. Politics entered the royal family of Deccan too. After the death of Asaf Jah-I, arose a struggle for succession. The British and French supported the competing factions resulting in a period of instability as two Nizams, Nasir Jung and Muzaffar Jung were assassinated by the rival faction just after they took over the throne. Their rule lasted only for four years. The fourth Nizam, Mir Ali Salabat Jung ascended the throne on French instigation and ruled for 12 years.
