There are two types of sources (primary and secondary) this is important to know as one is more reliable than the other.
The most effective way to preserve historical sources is through first deciding secondary and primary sources.
This is helpful as primary sources are tangible evidence such as a photo or a written paper by someone who witnessed first hand what they wrote about.
Secondary sources should be lower priority as there is a higher chance that the source is inaccurate or incorrect.
The source should be photographed and put into a orthographic format so if the source is lost there is photos. If the source is written it should be copied on a seperate page and digitally recorded and scanned. Obviously this should all be done by professionals.
This ilimanates most risks such as losing the original source and any changes made to the source that should not be there giving a backup.
Essentially treat it like an important 10,000 word assessment that you're working on, save it through creating backups and backups of the backup.
That's all.
