The author tries to convey that people generally understand the value of of someone or something in their life very often after it is lost to them. As for instance , franz did not take his studies seriously. He did not learn his lessons properly. Later he realised that if he would have studied nicely then he would have known his language. Now he had only one chance to get to learn his language and that to for the last time. similarly our wake up calls of life should not come so late. we must know the importance of every hour.

Hey here is yours answer

.
.
"the last lesson" conveys a beautiful message. life is an ongoing process and as long as man is alive he feels there is always a plenty of time to do things. he keep postponing learning the lessons of life. life may cut short his learning and it may prove to be a his last lesson . the Story highlights an identical situation.
as in the story people of Alsace felt that there was a plenty of time to learn their lessons even Franz was never serious about learning his lessons. as they receive the order from Berlin that French will no longer be taught in the school of Alsace and Loraine. then they realise the things.
at the end we can say that the message conveyed by the story is
"" one can never apprehend which day of life, he may be learning his last lesson "
