The message conveyed through all roles is that how discrimination and poverty affects a person.
- When opposed to his early years, Munoo's life deteriorates. He was mistreated as he was from a lower cast, finding it difficult to live in society.
- When Munoo, was working as a servant, one day the tea-tray falls from his hands, smashing the priceless China crockery for which he was humiliated.
- He then continues working as a Coolie. Due to competition he was paid a pittance, and the traders often harassed the coolies.
- Munoo, in his capacity as a representative, portrays the lives of all the coolies. They become slaves for the upper class because of their lower status. To survive in society, they had to do odd jobs throughout.
- He then travels to Bombay and finds work in a cotton factory. Despite the efforts he gets paid a little. The factory's executives were greedy and arrogant, taking advantage of workers' salaries in whatever way they can.
- Thus, however hard one may work, belonging to a lower caste and being poor deeply affects a person and does not let them grow.
