The First Flight by Liam O' Flaherty is a story of hesitation, trial and error and eventually getting success in the end. It is an fascinating tale of a shy and hesitant seagull  who learns how to fly. Although his two brothers and sister had already learned to fly, he was stopped from doing so by apprehension and uncertainty. His desire dive at the fish was presented as a blessing. He spread out his wings after a nervous start and started to fly up and down. It's been his first flight. The author sends a message that nobody immediately succeeds. He has been successful in repeated trials and errors.

Explanation:

  • The story gives the impression you learn with bravery and not with idleness. Bravery and cowardice are the relative terms. One is coward as long as fear encompasses him/her.
  • In this story the young seagull poses to be a coward incarnate.  His other 3 elder brothers and sister had already learnt to fly. The entire family members boosted the young seagull to fly; however, he couldn’t.
  • The seagull is being lovingly fed by his mother. But when it's time for him to fly, he feels afraid. His parents are trying to teach him other tricks to come to grips with it. But he's so afraid he refuses to fly.
  • His mother eventually hits a plan. With food in her beak, she tempts him. The hungry seagull comes to and falls from the rock to get food. In the same way he's scared, but then he opens his wings and starts flying. He's happy he doesn't fall into the sea. The young seagull then learns to how to fly. Apart from the message of courage we can also say  parental encouragement and discipline play a n exceptional t role in shaping the destiny of young children.
