The poem, The Cold Within has social relevance in the contemporary times. Most of the people appear to have been suffering from the cold within for one another.
It is quite true in world of ours all sufferings and problems exist because of the ill-will harbored by all men and women against someone or something. This world would have been a real paradise if this ill-will were not there. All the wars, holocausts, ethnic-cleansings, terrorist attacks, etc. were the outcome of this ill-will only. Ill-will is much more deadlier than the deadliest nukes; for nukes are also the product of ill-will.
In the poem, The Cold Within, the poet has beautiful portrayed this ill-will in men trapped in bitter cold. None of them offered their wooden log to keep the fire burning because they harbored ill-will against one another. this led to the death of all.
So, we see how dangerous and insidious ill-will is for mankind.
the message that the poet is trying to convey in the poem is that if we selfishly hold on to the world's resources, and the wealth that it has to offer,if we persist in discriminating on grounds of race, religion and caste then we are lost so we should not be cold from within.
the poet succeeds in carrying out his task by writing the poem.the poem describes the tragic death of a group of six who stand around a fire-each holding a log of wood.allowing their selfishness, prejudice, malice they refuse to share the log to renew the fire and keep each other warm.the next morning the fire dies out and all of them die by holding the log tightly in their hands.a log that could so easily save their lives if only they had overcome the petty barriers of class, race and religion that divided them.
