the frog asserts his importance by being authoritative, territorial, and imposing. he projected himself to be a great singer and lyricist and he also said that he was the leader of the "bog trumpet", the band. he boasted that he was a music critic and a musician. out of magnanimity he was ready to train the nightingale.

so here it is clear that vikram seth want to say that there are people in the world who boast themselves and show themselves as the boss and masters in things but mainly we must understand whether they are genuine and eligible of the respect we show to them.

the frog was happy in torturing the bird with vigorous practice. he knew deep within his heart that the nightingale talent out-shined his own and he was filled with pure jealousy. so people in this world show themselves as the people who are generous and helping and lend their hand but then we must decide and judge by ourselves whether they are genuinely helping us or just manipulating us as they are helping us.

also in this world there are people like nightingales who have the true potential but do not have self confidence and they fear to take a step ahead on their own.. so they easily get manipulated by people like that of a frog who authoritative and then these poor innocent people land up in trouble.

this is what is vikram seth trying to convey through the poem "frog and the nightingale."
