Generally, pyramids housed the tomb of the ruler or Pharaoh. It was meant to be their portal to after-life. Hence, such bodies were embalmed for preservation and decked with gold, diamonds and ornaments. The tombs also contained food for their journey with all other necessities. Scientific excavations throw light on the rule of Pharaohs, their lifestyles and wealth and the kingdom in general.
Pyramids were designed elaborately, with narrow twisting passages, often arranged in jigsaw manner, to deter tomb robbers and raiders.
