The rhizobium bacteria present in the root nodules of leguminus plants are in a symbiotic relationship with plants, they help the plants to fix atmospheric nitrogen to give soluble nitrates which  can be easily taken up by the plant.

Also, nitrogen is utilized in producing the molecule chlorophyll which is activated by sunlight and traps the energy of photons to break molecules of water during the light dependent phase of photosynthesis.
